On the Road to Northern Ireland
"Think where man's glory most begins and ends, and say my glory was I had such friends." --William Butler Yeats
Welcome to County Donegal. This is where our guide, Stephen, grew up. Stephen was a tour guide for the Tourist Office in Derry and met Rick Steves. Since 1998 Stephen does about 10 tours a year. He also owns a youth hostel in Derry, Paddy's Place Hostel. Derry or Londonderry? Let it be LegenDerry! Derry celebrates being the United Kingdom City of Culture for 2013 with many festivals and art exhibits. |
Derry has the most complete circuit of historic walls of any town in Ireland. It is 8 meters high and 1 mile around. It was constructed between 1613-1618 to protect the English and Scottish settlers of the new town. The Fountain area is where only 300 Loyalists live today inside a walled community.

The Bog Side has a memorial for Bloody Sunday of 1972 when 14 civilians were killed by the British soldiers. There is also a memorial to The Hunger of 1845. As we walking down a few blocks many buildings had murals painted on then to remember the Civil War. Below are some of the pictures.
